And in food, my friend works for a huge food company. Bid foods. They supply food to prisons, schools, the armed forces and huge chain restaurants. Because Muslims are vocal about their food being halal, and we seem indifferent, most of the meat they supply is halal. For me that’s not giving me the choice and lying by omission. Animals suffer unnecessarily with halal slaughter. I do not want to eat it, but often I will have without knowledge.
I was at an industry event last year and there was a certificate at lunch attesting that all the meat was halal. I had a miserable lunch, complained and heard nothing. Ritual slaughter is derogated under our laws. This must stop. Any animal slaughtered in the UK must comply with our compassionate laws. If people want halal/kosher, then it must be imported, subject to our meat hygiene laws and labelled with VERY BIG LETTERS.
